The Waves JJP Analog Legends Plug-In Bundle is modeled on the Fairchild 660, 670, the Pultec EQP-1A, and the Pultec MEQ-5, and was a three year collaborative effort with Jack Joseph Puig, who trusts that quality in his work producing and engineering for talent such as U2, Greenday and Lady Gaga. The resulting plug-ins are the PuigChild 660, PuigChild 670, PuigTec EQP-1A, and PuigTec MEQ-5 which are virtually indistinguishable from the original hardware.
About the Fairchild inspiration::
Known and coveted for their amazing sound quality, vintage Fairchild 670 compressors are fetching tens of thousands of dollars on the vintage market. Designed in the 1950’s by Rein Narma using single push-pull amplification stages with extremely high control voltages, with their 20 vacuum tubes and 4 hand-wired transformers, the mono 660 and stereo 670 weigh in at 65 lbs. The compression happens directly in the audio path instead of being routed to a separate circuit and the variable-mu limiters uniquely use tubes for gain reduction and amplification. The character of this equipment is so deliscious in part because each unit, and in fact each channel sometimes has its own distinct behavior. The original equipment actually grew out of a very early collaboration between Narma and Les Paul.
About the Pultec inspiration::
The initial iteration of the EQP-1A was the EQP-1, originally designed in 1951 by Gene Shenk and Ollie Summerland at Pulse Techniques, with the first passive program equalizer. Known for the capacity to accentuate individual frequency ranges without significantly altering other frequencies, the advancements developed for the EQP-1A were a gain makeup stage with push-pull design with multiple tubes. Conceived and created for broadband equalization, the EQP-1A features four low boost/cut frequencies, three high-cut frequencies and seven HF boost points, along with a bandwidth control for shaping the high boost curve. Paired as an equalization chain with the MEQ-5, this hardware has been beloved by recording and mastering engineers for generations.
