The Waves Tape, Tubes & Transisters Plug-In Bundle was developed in collaboration with legendary producer Eddie Kramer, who helped to create Jimi Hendrix’s state of the art Electric Lady Studios and produced such talents as the Beatles, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and Carlos Santana. Kramer also brought to this project his immense experience in creating film soundtracks.
This bundle includes three modeled plugins of the exquisite recording chain used by Eddie Kramer at London's Olympic Studios, including ::
1. Kramer Master Tape - modeled on a rare vintage 1/4" reel-to-reel machine)
2. HLS Channel - based on Helios mixing console
3. PIE Compressor - precision-modeled on a vintage Pye compressor
An early version of the classic American tube analogue reel-to-reel tape machine was used in 1954 at Sun Studios on Elvis’s first single “That’s All Right”. These machines were also the backbone of the earliest days of multi-track recording and installed in Les Paul’s home studio for use in his seminal work, and with 8-tracks became known as the “Octopus”. In 1958 Atlantic Records just had to have one as they were driving the industry forward with multi-track recording on a regular basis.
Waves took note of how the recording curve, tape speed, tape emulsion, tape thickness, flux or level recorded on the tape, and the bias settings all greatly impacted the final result. After much experimentation by the Waves crew with the original equipment, we settled on modeling the plug-in on 3M Scotch 207 tape which was in broad use in those early days at both 15 ips (inches per second) for its gentle roll off at around 16 kHz, and 7.5 ips as the minimum reasonable professional quality speed for studios.
