So you say you don’t have $60,000 to drop on a vintage SSL 4000 mixing console? Well, the Waves SSL 4000 Collection Plug-In Bundle will provide you with incredible models of Solid State Logic’s legendary SSL 4000 mixing consoles: SSL E-Channel, G-Channel, G-Equalizer and G-Master Buss Compressor.
Introduced in 1979, the original SSL 4000 E console brought a modern sound to the world, with its bold, punchy character and incredible dynamics. Some describe this as bringing and edgier sound to the studio recordings of the time. Shortly thereafter came the 4000 G, updated with additional routing options, somewhat cleaner circuitry for greater transparency, and slightly different EQ characteristics. The G series EQ added a proportional Q design which produced different curves than the E series, and what some would call a smoother sound.
Both the 4000 E and G module have their own character, perhaps a little more aggressive, some would say a little more “rock & roll” compared to their competition coming from API and Neve at the time. They eventually gave way to SSL’s 9000 series, and later digital consoles. While perhaps not as clean as the later models, the SSL 4000 E and G have a sound all their own and left their finger prints all over the biggest recordings of the 1980’s and 90’s.
For many, the jewel-in-the-crown of the 4000 series was its G-Master Buss Compressor, a final compressor strapped across the main outs. This compressor goes to work on individual instruments and pulls all the ingredients together to create a unified and cohesive sound.
Finally, the SSL G-Equalizer plug-in is similar to the E-Channel EQ, with a slightly greater gain range than the E, and slightly different EQ curves. It’s modeled on the rack-mount version of SSL’s G 292, a different design than the E-Channel EQ (242) and G-Channel EQ (384) circuits. A Phase button and Trim knob are included, but the Lowpass Filter of the Channel EQs is omitted.
